Extension Activities
Although the book is fun in itself, here are some activities that can help expand the learning and put a practical spin on all the information!
1. Tét - The New Year! As a class, look up what Tét means. When is it celebrated? If there happens to be a Tét celebration happening in your town, take a look and see what it's all about! Today I want you guys to create handouts for your classmates to inviting them to a celebration of the New Year, Tét! These invitations should include what the party is all about and what makes people want to attend. Why would you wanna go? To be clear, there is not a celebration that we are throwing, but students should be in the mindset to inform people of the party to be held in honor of Tét.
2. Vietnamese Cuisine - Reading through the book, we learn of Há like and dislike of certain foods. Wouldn't it be interesting to know what she's talking about? If you get the opportunity, go to an Asian market nearby and find some food she was talking about! Taste the cuisine and write a journal (like Há did) throughout your experience to share with the class. In the book, Há mentions:
